Waterfall: Sustainable and Stylish Chair and Armchair

A Unique Design Created by Jorge Prieto

In our days, mass production and consumption are negatively impacting our environment. Jorge Prieto, a renowned designer, recognized the need for a better way to utilize the waste we produce and create sustainable and stylish products.

Waterfall is a new line of chairs and armchairs that sets itself apart from others in the market. What makes this design unique is the combination of different used plywood planks that have been bent with just one mold and joined together, resulting in a one-of-a-kind piece. The chairs and armchairs can be stacked for easy storage, and the production process is both fast and cost-effective.

The production of Waterfall begins with the selection of discarded plywood layers that would otherwise go to waste. These layers are cut into different sizes and glued together, taking shape through vacuum-bag molding using a single mold. Once the chair is built, a transparent ecologic water varnish is applied, providing protection while allowing the natural color and texture of the plank to shine through. For outdoor use, the chair and armchair can also be upholstered with natural wool or waterproof fabric.

The dimensions of the Waterfall chair and armchair are 494 x 660 x 860 mm, making them suitable for various spaces and settings.

By sitting on the Waterfall chair, users can experience a tactile connection with the materials used, raising awareness about the excessive consumption prevalent in our society. Each chair showcases different textures, colors, and plank lengths, making it a truly unique piece. Additionally, the option to upholster the chair in a variety of colors allows for customization and personalization.

The Waterfall project was initiated in September 2009 in Yecla, Murcia, and completed in June 2011 in Valencia. Throughout the design process, extensive research was conducted to identify sustainable materials and production methods. The team explored various furniture designs, materials commonly discarded, and manufacturing processes. This research revealed that many existing furniture designs and materials have a negative impact on the environment, such as fiberglass products.

One of the main challenges faced during the design process was finding a sustainable solution to recycle materials. The team devised a method to mold used plywood layers through a vacuum-bag process, which proved to be the most cost-effective and efficient production method. This approach not only reduces waste but also ensures that each chair is unique, with distinct colors, textures, and plank lengths. The Waterfall chair can also be upholstered in a wide range of colors, providing further customization options.

The Waterfall chair and armchair were created as a response to the unsustainable mass production prevalent in our society. By utilizing discarded plywood planks and employing an innovative production process, Jorge Prieto has crafted a design that is both sustainable and stylish. The ability to stack the chairs and armchairs for easy storage, coupled with the fast and affordable production, makes Waterfall accessible to a wide range of individuals. The option to upholster the chair with natural wool adds an extra touch of comfort and elegance.

The Waterfall design has been recognized for its excellence and creativity, receiving the Bronze A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category in 2013. This prestigious award honors designs that demonstrate resourcefulness, technical skill, and a commitment to improving quality of life. Waterfall's unique combination of art, science, design, and technology contributes to a better world.
